Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has announced STARTUPS TO THE RESQUE, an ASEAN-wide startup competition to develop the best innovation solutions related to disaster resilience and recovery to be held during DTI’s annual Slingshot event on October 20, 2017 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
This challenge empowers startups from across the region to come up with ways to use their existing products, services, and business models to form creative solutions to pressing global issues, including environmental disasters, outbreaks/pandemics, or violence and conflict. The Slingshot ASEAN event also provides a platform for startups to network, build regional market access, and gain international exposure.
The first prize winner will receive $10,000; second prize winner will receive $4,000; and third prize winner will receive $2,000. Scores are based on both the innovativeness and feasibility of a startup’s idea, and those with the most promising solutions will have the opportunity to work with the UNDP and deploy their solutions with PDRF, one of the world’s leading private sector disaster resilience consortia comprised of the Philippines’ top corporations.
“We want to create more success stories for startups,” says Rene “Butch” Meily, President of both QBO and IdeaSpace. “By creating a platform for startups to pitch and potentially activate their ideas, we’re giving them the opportunity to grow, deliver meaningful impact to relevant communities, and make the world a better place.”

Country’s largest food market chain embraces cashless convenience of GCash
Both consumers and merchants of highly-popular night food market Mercato Centrale do not have to worry anymore about paying smaller bills and giving out exact change as GCash, the leading mobile money service provider in the Philippines, rolls out the first QR mobile payments service at the country’s largest foodpark chain.
With this newest feature within the GCash App, customers can already use their GCash account to pay for their food and drinks by simply scanning QR codes displayed at Mercato Centrale merchants. For consumers, this eliminates the hassle of bringing money, waiting for change, or getting into a dispute with the cashier over payments. Merchants, on the other hand, no longer need expensive machines to process mobile money transactions but only a QR with a unique code that is linked to their GCash wallet.
“Mynt is dedicated to bringing the latest innovations in payments and e-commerce to the Philippines to continually enable the financially underserved, and this service is just one of many to come.” said James Mauricio Aujero, Head, Merchant Acquisition of Mynt, a subsidiary of Globe Telecom, which aims to address financial inclusion through mobile money, micro-loans, and technology.
“GCash is a great opportunity for our small-scale food business entrepreneurs to serve more clients, expand their customer base and scale up their business!”, Mercato Centrale co-founder RJ Ledesma added, pertaining to the value and convenience GCash adds to his franchise.
To use the scan to pay GCash feature, a customer with an iPhone or an Android smartphone only needs to download or update to the latest version of the GCash App, register for an account, and fund his GCash wallet at any of over 12,000 GCash Partner Outlets nationwide, including Globe Stores, SM Business Centers, Puregold branches, Robinsons Business Centers, 7-Eleven Cliqq kiosks, and TouchPay kiosks, among others. Once done, he just has to tap on Scan QR, point is phone’s camera at the partner’s QR code, and pay.
“Mynt aims to bring access and convenience in payments to the vast majority of Filipinos through GCash. With our recently announced strategic partner, Ant Financial, we will use technology that has scaled for hundreds of millions of customers in China, India and other countries in Asia. We will do this in partnership with local merchants and are very excited to be associated with Mercato Centrale as a pioneer in introducing QR-based payments to the market”, added Mynt’s Chief Operating Officer Anthony Thomas.
Also featured in the GCash-Mercato Centrale partnership is GCat, GCash’s friendly white cat mascot. Customers should expect more of GCat in the coming months as the company rapidly expands its presence nationwide from commercial payments to business solutions.
Inspired by the Asian night food market scene, Mercato Centrale is the Philippines’ largest and longest-running food market in the Philippines. With its flagship location in Bonifacio Global City and upcoming locations in Metro Manila, it caters to thousands of foodies from Wednesdays to Saturdays, from 6PM to 3AM, serving a wide variety of great-tasting meals from authentic home-based chefs ranging from Japanese to Mexican to European cuisines to local comfort and street food. Food prices range from P50 to a still affordable P200 per meal. It is located at 7th Ave. cor. 25th St. in Bonifacio Global City.
GCash’s scan to pay QR code feature is continuing its rollout in select partner merchants in the coming weeks. Its introduction is in line with with the thrust of China’s Ant Financial, parent company of Alipay and strategic partner of Mynt, to accelerate financial inclusion and upgrade payment services in the Philippines. Alipay popularized QR code payments in China with over 400 million users.
Mynt is a fully-owned subsidiary of Globe Capital Venture Holdings, Inc.. that provides innovative and first-in-world fintech solutions to consumers, merchants, and organizations. Its purpose is to enable financial access for consumers and merchants by disrupting traditional channels through digital financial technology services. It operates two fintech companies: GCash, a micropayment service that transforms the mobile phone into a virtual wallet for secure, fast, and convenient money transfer, and Fuse, a tech-based lending company that enables Filipinos to get personal and business loans through use of mobile technology, alternative data, and innovative credit scoring methods. Featuring Picture-on-Wall Design, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, LG OLED TV Delivers Unrivaled Home Cinema Experience
MANILA, September 12, 2017 – The future of home cinema entertainment has arrived with the introduction of LG Signature OLED TV in the Philippines, via an official launch ceremony at the Ascott, BGC. LG is the pioneer in OLED technology (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). Thanks to OLED, we can now enjoy more vivid visuals like never before. Over the course of the past five years, LG has continually developed a better, more vibrant viewing experience. The result is the LG Signature OLED TV.
There is indeed cause to be excited because the pinnacle of this 5-year continuous improvement is embodied in the sleek 77-inch LG Signature OLED TV, the first LG Signature TV to be made available in the Philippines. LG Signature is the gold standard in design. Behind it is an intuitive, responsive and functional design philosophy that spells sheer elegance in simplicity.
OLED technology makes perfect blacks and perfect colors come alive, and the viewing experience is complemented by exceptional sound with the Dolby Atmos audio system. This is the first time that the Dolby Atmos has ever been featured in TV speakers. The result mimics reality on your TV. Also because of OLED, the screen is so thin, it’s picture-in-glass thin! The result is a perfect viewing angle, wherever you are relative to the TV. Through the webOS, you can sit back and binge-watch movies and shows on Netflix for hours of non-stop excitement. No one can blame you if you never want to leave the house again!
“With Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos integrated into our newest OLED products, viewers will be able to recapture the magic of the cinema and experience their favorite movies with their original clarity, depth and imagination intact,” said Mr. Tony An, Vice President for Home Entertainment, LG Electronics Philippines. “The stunning new TVs on available in the market demonstrate our commitment to innovation and leadership in OLED Technology.”
With the arrival of the LG Signature OLED TV in the Philippines, we welcome a new era in TV. It has elevated the home TV entertainment experience.
